Heard the story before?

For those who are unaware. In 1911, Albert Santos Dumont (Cartier's pilot-friend), asked the latter to create a unique watch. He wanted to wear a wristwatch while flying his plane.  The legendary French watchmaker wasted no time and went straight to it. In no time, he was out with the first men’s wristwatch!

Cartier made dozens of variations on the theme. The watches came with Roman numerals, screws in the bezel and square case being the defining characteristics of the model.

The Case

Judging by the name, you can expect this series to be larger. However, that’s not the case. The watch measures 39.80mm with a case thickness of 9.38mm. For a square wristwatch, the model has a significant presence on the wrist. The size of the larger variant is approximately 5mm larger than the Santos du Cartier Medium variant.

The case is brushed stainless steel and has a black ADLC coated bezel that remains secured with eight prominent screws. The round-square case has a brushed texture and features a refined beveled edge that blends seamlessly into the curve of the crown guards.

The Dial

The most significant feature of the larger model is the dial. It is satin-brushed dark grey and has a railroad-style seconds and minute’s perimeter. The inner dial comes with a date window located at the 6 o’clock position. Another fascinating feature is that the watch uses a black background with white numbers for the day of the month.

On the outer dial, you can see sword-shaped hands, white roman numerals and small index-style markers at each of the five-minute gaps. The dial has a smooth finish, and every detail is luminous.

The Movement

The in-house 1847 MC self-winding movement powers the Cartier Santos De Cartier Large. And, the 23-jewel Manufacture calibre features an automatic winding with a frequency of 4Hz. The watch has a power reserve of up to 42hours.

Bracelet Design

The watch is available in a steel bracelet and a soft black rubber strap. Both the straps come with a steel folding buckle. One of the most attractive features of the bracelet is a SmartLink system. It allows for free-tool adjustments of the bracelet size. You have to push a recessed button that releases the pin from its chamber. This way you can quickly remove the links to adjust the size.
